Bayside Bridal Fair – Wrap Up

We had a lovely day at the Bayside Bridal Fair held at the Wynnum RSL Club on Sunday February 12. Open from 10am to 2pm, the inaugural fair saw a flurry of activity as soon as the door opened. With around 100 brides some with their grooms, family and friends snaked their way around the 35 exhibitor stands chatting with local industry professionals showcasing products and ideas to help with wedding day planning.

At the Penny Lane Bridal stand, we showcased a selection of our bridal shoes, with the Tulip bridal shoe proving to be the most popular. Brides were ‘wowed’ by the gold gem textured sole and stiletto heel. Our selection of large hair combs was also very popular. We took along our mobile wedding gown rack and mannequins and displayed some of our fabulous sale dresses, new wedding gowns styles for 2012 and our new bridesmaid dress range, all receiving positive reviews.

A highlight of the day was the mock vow renewal ceremony. Our beautiful bride Kylie had her hair and makeup done by Judith McGoldrick with the gorgeous sweeping barrel roll style featuring a new bridal hair comb from our 2012 range.

Helping motorists celebrate Valentine’s Day with some bridal cheer

On Valentine’s Day, to make commuter’s smile the ladies from Penny Lane Bridal and Bridal Bliss dressed in wedding dresses and spread cupid’s love to motorists as they travelled to work. Up bright and early to catch the morning traffic on Wynnum Road, Morningside; Rebecca, Natalie and Lauren dressed in gorgeous gowns supplied and stocked by Penny Lane Bridal, set about making commuters wave and toot as they wished commuters a ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’.

The vantage point was the centre medium strip outside Penny Lane Bridal and Bridal Bliss which are located side by side on Wynnum Road, Morningside. Armed with signs spreading the cupid’s message and their store logos, the trio waved and smiled at both inbound and outbound lanes of traffic.

Looking gorgeous in their white wedding dresses, motorists; grateful for a little cheer on their mundane Tuesday morning commute tooted their horns, flashed their lights and waved. Natalie from Bridal Bliss was even lucky enough to receive a marriage proposal.

As the brides waved, and the traffic tooted wedding photographer Andrew Merefield from Elite Studio captured the event on camera.

Real Wedding: Brett & Evie – November 2011

Custom made silk bridesmaid dresses

Custom made silk bridesmaid dresses by Penny Lane Bridal

I first met Evie almost a year ago when she bundled into Penny Lane Bridal with a buzz of excitement and an imagination filled with ideas. Evie, a graphic designer is very creative. She who knew the style of wedding she and Brett wanted and she set out to achieve it. Their wedding was uniquely them; with quirky vintage elements, romantic gestures and gorgeous surroundings.

Penny Lane Bridal worked with Evie and her three lovely bridesmaids to design the bridesmaid dresses. These dresses were styled slightly differently for each bridesmaid to suit their individual body shapes. The colours were carefully chosen to compliment Evie’s gorgeous champagne and ivory lace vintage gown and the gorgeous rainforest setting. We used stunning soft silk sating with silk chiffon overlay. Each dress featured a silk satin belt.

Compliments must go to: Flowers from Vera & Rose : www.veraandrose.com & fantastic Photography by Marc Ash :: www.marcashphotography.com & Evie herself :www.bunnymoon.biz did styling and design and DIY most things for the day.

Finding your dream wedding dress within your budget

Some of us have always had an image in our minds of what we wanted to wear on our wedding days, others (me included) hadn’t really thought about it. So where do you start? The process can be a little daunting – especially if you start at a large showroom, on a Saturday with an entourage in toe.

Here are a few tips for finding that perfect dress within your budget.

Do preliminary research

  1. Browse magazines and website searching for ideas of dresses that suit your wedding style or theme
  2. Short list your target stores and make appointments if necessary
  3. Keep an open mind about styles until you start trying things on as you may be surprised at what really suits your body

As for sales staff help

  1. Bridal sales staff can be a great source of help. If they really  know their products they should be able to suggest styles that will suit your body shape
  2. During you first few initial outings at stores, let the sales staff know you have just started looking and are interested in what they think will look good on you. Keep an open mind when trying things on as you may be surprised
  3. Make sure you discuss the style, feel or theme for your day as you don’t want to be trying on a traditional gown with cathedral length train if you are having a simple garden ceremony.

Doing the leg work

  1. It can be an overwhelming experience trying on wedding gowns especially when it comes to putting veils on (and especially if you are not sure if you want one), so try and go looking and trying on gowns during the week. Saturdays’ are generally crazy which can make it even more overwhelming.
  2. Doing the ground work buy yourself to work out a few styles you like may be a good idea that way you can bring a friend or your mother back once you have a short list.

Getting Opinions

  1. Take a friend with you who will give you an honest opinion about what suits you, but who also understands your personal style.
  2. Don’t ask for too many opinions as it can be very confusing. You will know when you have found your dress without the need for anyone else’s opinion.  I love it when you see the look in a brides face when she just loves her gown.

Your gown within budget

  1. Keep your budget in mind when selecting bridal stores to try on gowns at. There are a variety of stores around that cater for different budgets.
  2. Make sure you ask about lay-by periods and if there is any discount for full upfront payment
  3. Ask questions about alteration costs and if possible get a written quote at the time of ordering

Proposing marriage to your man – January 29

So, I heard something interesting this week – according to some ‘folk law’ it is ‘OK’ for women to propose marriage to their man in a leap year. Now, I found this quite interesting as surely in the current era a women should be able to propose to her man on any day of any year – although I would be interested in learn what percentage of women propose to men versus the reverse.

So after visiting Wikipedia this is what I learned:

Supposedly, a 1288 law by Queen Margaret of Scotland (then age five and living in Norway – interesting that a child aged 5 could come up with this!), required that fines be levied if a marriage proposal (initiated by a woman) was refused by the man; compensation ranged from a kiss to £1 to a silk gown, in order to soften the blow. In some places the tradition was tightened to restricting female proposals to the modern leap day, February 29. (source: Wikipedia)

There are so many questions I have: Do you get your man and engagement ring or do you get one? I’d love to hear from ladies who are planning a proposal for this February 29!

Clay & Christy Wedding – 9/10/11 – Cedar Creek Winery, Mt Tamborine

It was a pleasure to attend the recent wedding of my long time friend Clay and his beautiful bride Christy at Cedar Creek Winery, Mt Tamborine. It was also such an honour to dress the gorgeous bride and cute flower girl. Christy came to see me shortly after her and Clay got engaged to look at dresses. Like many brides she had looked online and came in store with a list of names of gowns she wanted to try on. The gown she picked was one the original list. Christy wore our ‘Emily’ gown which hugged her stunning figure in all the right places. Christy opted for the open back, which looked so amazing. The delicate lace straps with the lace overlay of the dress and the beading emulated vintage romance style.

Christy also chose a very glamorous hair comb to feature in her sweeping hair style.

I was asked if I would make Christy’s niece, Poppy a flower girl dress that would tie in with Christy’s dress. It was quite a different experience doing a dress fitting on an 18 month old, but Poppy also looked super gorgeous.

As you can see from the beautiful photos taken by Kelly from Kelly Adams Photography, Cedar Creek Winery was a stunning setting for Clay & Christy’s wedding. It was such a wonderful wedding, filled with love and laughs. I wish my beautiful friends a lifetime of happiness together and thank you for letting me be a part of your day.

Bridal Style – 3D Lace Trend, 2012

I’m totally in love with texture at the moment, whether it’s in the home or in fashion, so I am excited about the current trend for 2012 bridal wear – 3D lace. 3D lace gives greater emphasis on the depth of the lace or lace motifs. Often the lace pieces are not totally sewn down on to gowns, so you may have a few leaves or flowers that appear to lift off the fabric. This gives the lace the three dimensional look. It is perfect for layering and using with soft fabrics.

On a trip overseas last year, before I’d even heard about ‘3D lace’ I found some amazing ivory flower lace which is being used as inspiration for my next design. Using the individual lace flowers and leaves, these will be placed on a strapless bodice with tea length skirt. Using bridal satin, organza and tulle layers, the lace pieces will be placed between these layers to further emphasize the 3D effect.

3D lace we are currently using in our latest design.

We are totally loving the 3D lace seen on the runway at New York Fashion week, Fall 2012 where Oscar de la Renta delivered stunning embroideries with beautiful 3D floral accents and preciously pleated organza. These are some of our favourite from the Oscar de la Renta show (images sourced from www.oscardelarenta.com)

Style inspiration from the 2012 Golden Globes.

It’s awards time again in Tinseltown and the 2012 Golden Globes did not disappoint in the fashion stakes. I have to admit, I haven’t even seen any of the awards or stage banter, like many women, I only really care about the fashion!

This year’s red carpet saw a lot of beautiful nude and soft tones, which is fabulous for wedding dress style and inspiration. I have selected some of my favourite pieces from the show – check them out below.

Shailene Woodley: Marchesa

This is my favourite - Shailene Woodley wearing Marchesa

I am totally in love with this Marchesa gown worn by Shailene Woodley. The attention to detail in the figure flattering bodice is amazing. The soft silk chiffon drapes so beautifully and the colour looks stunning on Woodley’s complexion. (image source: style.mtv.com)

Jessica Alba: J. Mendel wedding dress

Jessica Alba: J. Mendel wedding dress

My runner-up gown from the Globes is this J. Mendel gown worn by Jessica Alba. Again I am totally loving the soft pink colour and the heavy been detail on the dress. Totally loving the beaded front with the insert chiffon train. (image source: onewed.com)

Elle McPherson: Zac Posen

Elle McPherson: Zac Posen

Wow! How amazing does Elle McPherson look at 47. This Zac Posen gown is gorgeous! Totally loving the intricate and delicate neckline on this bodice. Its so soft and feminine. This is the ultimate mermaid gown. (image source: onewed.com)

Kim Kardashian: Bruce Oldfield

Kim Kardashian: Bruce Oldfield

Moving away from the soft nude and ivory tones, I am loving this heavily beaded black gown by Bruce Oldfield. The lace neckline and cap sleeves are just stunning. The fit on Kim Kardashian is immaculate - total glamour. (image source: dailymail.co.uk)

What do you think? Would you like to see any of these style elements in your bridal gown? Let us know!
